Spittal an der Drau - The Town
The town of Spittal an der Drau is often used by visitors as a gateway to Lake Millstätter See, which lies only four kilometres east of the town. Spittal is also a tourist centre that serves the entire lake region - however, this should not keep you from having a closer look at the town itself before you head for the swimming, windsurfing and other water-sports.

Austria′s most elaborate Renaissance castle is right inside the town: The centrally located Schloss Porcia Castle was built be the Spanish noble-man Gabriel of Salamanca, who served as a treasurer to the Habsburgs in the 15th century. A very wealthy man, he bought an entire county and got Italian craftsman to erect a presentable castle right in the middle of it.

Beyond the city limits, the big attraction is Spittal′s scenic surroundings, best explored from the local mountain Goldeck. The 2142-metre-high summit can be attacked by hiking all the way up, or alternatively through the use of a cable-car in combination with a chair lift.

With an area of the district is 2,763.99 km², it is Austria's second largest district by area, it is even larger than the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, and by far the largest district in Carinthia.
Together with the neighbouring districts of Hermagor and Feldkirchen, Spittal forms the Upper Carinthia (Oberkärnten) region. It borders on East Tyrol in the west and the Austrian state of Salzburg in the north.
The mountainous area comprises the southern ranges of the Hohe Tauern and the western Gurktal Alps (Nock Mountains), as well as the broad Drava Valley and the northern slopes of the Gailtal Alps. The highest point is the peak of the Grossglockner, at 3,798 metres (12,461 ft). The district also includes Millstätter See and Weissensee, two of the major Carinthian lakes.

The "Goldeckbahn" cable-car operates for skiers in the winter season and hikers in the summer season with short breaks in between. It departs from a base station south of the town centre. A central station will give you access to several hiking trails; for conquering the summit, you can also go further up with a chair lift ("Sessellift") continuing from the central station.

Hiking at the Goldeck
The Goldeck is the perfect starting point for easy, untroublesome hikes overcoming a little difference in altitude while enjoying a wonderful panorama. In just a few minutes drive the Goldeck mountain railway takes you from the district capital Spittal at the Drau to over 2000m above sea level to offer you a unique natural spectacle.
The impressive distant view includes the cristal clear Lake Millstatt as well as the mild "Nockberge". In the West you can spot the mountain chains of the 3000 meter mountains including Austria's highest mountain the "Großglockner". The stonelike "Karawanken" and the beautiful "Karnischen" Alps complete the panorama from the peak of Carinthia's Sports Mountain Goldeck.

Goldeck's Panorama Road
Goldeck's Panorama road has a length of 14,5 km leading from Zlan to the final parking lot "Seetal" at 1895m. The ten turns and the parking spots along the road offer you repeatedly magnificent look-outs at the "Millstätter Alpe" and the Lake Millstatt, the "Nockberge", the "Gailtaler Alm", the "Karawanken" and the Drau valley until the city Villach. Far away you can spot the snowy peaks of the "Julischen" and the "Karnischen" alps. Because of its great views, Goldeck's Panorama road counts to Carinthia's most popular destinations.
